This
website covers my work as an environmental consultant dealing
with buildings and sustainable construction, and my interests in
sustainable transport and combating climate change.
Primary work areas:
- Enabling compliance with UK
Building Regulations* Part L, and Part 6 in Scotland, on
conservation of fuel and power.
- Calculation of SAP Rating, Design Emissions Rate (DER) and
Target Emissions Rate (TER) using the Standard Assessment
Procedure (SAP) and Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM).
- Provision of Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) under UK government legislation for buildings
- Meeting requirements for the renewable energy input to
buildings such as the Merton Rule.
I am an experienced professional with in-depth knowledge of
calculation procedures and engineering and physical principles. I
work from the architectural drawings, not from forms completed by
the client, and advise on the design aspects (insulation, heating
system, solar power, etc) that will best meet with building
regulations, or will exceed current emissions standards by a
required amount. I am an accredited SAP/EPC assessor.
I create my own software which enables me to carry out interactive
calculations of U-values and other criteria on all the dwellings
in a project (such as a block of flats or housing estate)
simultaneously and optimise results for the project as a
whole.
I handle conversions and extensions as well as new-build. The
rules for "Material Change of Use" and for extensions in
Regulations Parts L1b and L2b are different from rules for
new-build. Again, I carry out simultaneous calculations for all
the flats in a conversion project.
*Building Regulations define the amount of carbon dioxide
emissions permitted from the heating and other energy consuming
services of new and altered buildings. The thermal qualities of
the insulating envelope of the building are a major factor in
determining CO2 emissions.
