Weston-super-Mare: Why do cyclists have to go the long way round like the motorists? Isn't the council supposed to promote cycling and discourage driving?
Often these closures do, or could, allow bikes to pass. Local authorities and contractors need to recognize ALL road users and state "closed for motor vehicles - open for cycles and pedestrians". This "closure" of a mile stretch of lane in Somerset would have meant a 2 mile detour, but taking a chance revealed that it was open all the way for cycles.
Despite an assurance from Site Engineer for the roadworks that the road was open for cycles, signs stated the road was closed - and directed all traffic, including bikes, on to the Long Ashton Bypassas and a mile of potholes at drains. We asked to have "EXCEPT CYCLES" added to the sign.
